It is called, appropriately enough, the Blizzard of 2013. The storm has been going for days, covering nearly a half of the United States in white-out conditions. It was first observed on Saturday at midday and has since consolidated into one low pressure area. Winds have been sustained at 40 miles per hour, with gusts exceeding 60 miles per hour.
Behind the storm, however, lies a tiny, meandering stream of strong winds that serve as a counter-clockwise flow to the massive squall line. The winds are a result of flow behind the large storm, a pattern that is responsible for a lot of the cyclonic phenomena around the globe.
The Boston Globe reports that the "counter-clockwise flow, known as a gyre, is much stronger than the storm itself." The gale center for this system sits at the center of the massive low, moving west to east.
"It's just like the counter clockwise flow of the great Atlantic hurricane, where the storm is on the periphery and the counterclockwise flow just kind of pushes it along," said Brian McNoldy, the acting director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami, to the Globe.
The direct effects of the storm aren't quite as severe as the Death Valley temblors of the Great Blizzard of 1888, but the relentless winds and Arctic cold are having a crippling effect on the East Coast, one that could last weeks.
"The situation is very bad," said Jean-Louis Le Tourneau, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boston, to ABC News. "This is the worst winter storm since the Blizzard of 1987. We're in line with other top 10 blizzards in the history of be359ba680
